Service Learning Semester Two

Today we read the Lion and the Mouse from Aesop's Fables. I think the big idea of this story is "Appearances", because appearances don't matter, and the smallest things can do the biggest, and greatest things. I think that that is the theme because the small mouse saved the lion from the net.

This story connects with our visit to the Methodist Home, because the residents of the Methodist Home is like the lion, who needs our help and company, and we are the mice giving it to them.

Our class goals for our next visit to the Methodist Home could be:

  • To make the residents (of the Methodist Home) happy, and feel welcomed.
  • To share our time, and make them feel special.

Informational Writing Celebration

The best thing about Informational Writing was I learned many different perspectives of how people see my writing, and I took in some feedback to guide me on what I should do next time.
Next time I will add a glossary and make my presentation more "interesting" and less "boring" as Emily said. I may also make an index.
I learned from my peers about New Zealand and how to swim (even though I know how to swim)! I also learned that some people don't know much about Greek Mythology, so I should make a glossary.
I ate a ridiculously small amount of popcorn because someone, (a.k.a. Jake) spit chewed up popcorn into my popcorn.

Jump-A-Thon

Today we did our grade 5 fundraising project, Jump-A-Thon, for Tabitha.

The BEST thing about about today was that the Jump-A-Thon was basically a free time in the car park playground, but jumping for a good reason. I think that it was really fun that we can have fun while also helping people.

Wonder

Ms. H's class finally finished our first read aloud of the year, Wonder, by R.J. Palacio. The book Wonder is about a boy named August (Auggie for short), and he has a unique face. The story is basically how he starts school in 5th grade after being homeschooled for his whole life, and what he goes through.

Words I would use to describe this book are:

  • Marvelous
  • Exciting
  • Amazing
I think the message the of the book is not to judge someone by their appearance because appearances (and faces) don't matter, and only a person's personality is what should be judged.

Summer is my favorite character because not only was she Auggie's really close friend, but also acknowledged Auggie for who he was and not what he looked like. Summer is a great friend to have, because she would give up a lot of opportunities to be your friend.

I would definitely recommend this book because it was very meaningful, and what Auggie went through is realistic, yet very interesting. The book showed feelings that a real person might have and also many friendship problems that are pretty common in the real world. R.J. Palacio made fiction feel true.
